Ten Tips to The Art of Picking Art

Decorating your home takes a lot of time and patience. Many people look to create a certain atmosphere, or follow a particular theme within their home, a large part of this is picking artwork to go in certain rooms.

Here at Picture Frames Express, we believe that art can really make or break the look and feel of a room. Which is why we have picked out some top tips to the art of picking art for your home.

1. Space

What size space are you looking to fill? A larger space can accommodate one large image or alternatively you can look to fill with various themed pieces clustered together. The key to this is ensuring that you get multiple pictures with a common theme.

2. Colour

Not set in stone but certainly worth thinking about is the colour theme you have in your room. When picking a piece of art this is a good place to start, whether you will be looking to match or clash the colour in the art to your room or are looking to make a statement with a more standout/ alternative colour.

3. Theme

Do you have a common theme running through your home? Some people go for nature, seaside, cottage themes through their homes. Try to match your picture choice to this theme. For example for a seaside themed home pick a piece of art reflecting the ocean.

4. What style does your home reflect?

Similar to theme, style is more taking into account the age your home is reflecting. Some people for example go for a more classic, rustic look in their homes meaning a more classic piece would work best e.g. landscapes. On the other hand some people have a modern home which can carry off a more contemporary piece of art.

5. Think about mounting

Once you have your piece in mind, consider how you plan to display it. Will you choose to hang a canvas directly on a wall, frame it, or have in mounted. Mounting a canvas works particularly well with very large paintings or board paintings.

6. To frame or not to frame

There’s no denying some art looks better with a frame, others look better without. If you have a canvas consider whether you actually want it framing before purchasing one. The effect on the edges on some pieces makes them look naturally more pleasing without a bordering frame.

7. Focal Point

Get the most out of your artwork by giving it the attention it deserves- make it a focal point in your room. Every room has that one wall you can’t help but look at. Why not put your art up here so it is proudly displayed for all to see.

8. Meaning

When looking to hang a piece of art in your home consider if it has meaning or whether you are simply purchasing for aesthetic purposes. There’s nothing wrong with if a piece of art has no meaning e.g. makes you remember that trip you took to the seaside or reminds you of a special time, but consider that you are looking to live with this art on your wall for a long time, and you are more likely to enjoy something for longer in your home if it holds a special place in your heart.

9. Personal Preference

Love at first sight is a principle that can easily be applied to picking the right piece of art in your home. If you see something in a shop and it instantly stands out to you (for the right reasons hopefully) or you are drawn to it, the chances are that you can live with it in your home. If your not drawn to a piece of art immediately chances are it was never meant to be, even if it would look good in that corner on your wall; if you don’t love it now you probably never will so don’t force it, trust your personal art preferences.

10. Tailor your room to your art or your art to your room

The answer to this dilemma really depends at what stage of decorating your room is in. If its fairly minimal or you are looking to decorate anyway then it is fairly easy to pick a standout creative piece and then add some touches to your room to make them work well together. However if you’ve got your room just how you want it; colour theme and all then it is probably easier to tailor the art to this. Don’t forget you can easily add some key things such as pillows or a lampshade to make a piece of art work better in your room.
