Following a good few posts on surreal digital artists, we would like to show that surreal imagery isn’t always digital!
In the form of a relatively short post featuring some brilliant surreal paintings, as in: real, hand-painted paintings! Which is a welcome break from all the digitally altered, created and manipulated stuff; though still a fascinating topic for us to cover!
A fantastic Russian-born painter specialises in just the sort of perception twisting surreal imagery that we love so much here at Picture Frames Express.
His name… Is Vladmir Kush!
We suggest clicking the paintings to open them fullsize in a new window, it’s the only way to truly admire the detail and care that has gone into creating such masterpieces!

It’s amazing how the saturation of an image can totally alter the message it conveys, for example: imagine a photograph of a beautiful blue sky, littered with clouds and a vibrant rainbow spanning the width of the image… now think of that in black & white. The emotions it can spark turn 180 degrees and the connotations of the image are almost reversed. Most people associate black & white photography with a long gone age of sepia family portraits and torn edged Polaroids, but black & white photography is just as popular today as it ever has been. Perhaps more so with the emergent age of digital photography and photo manipulation we have discussed so much, the capabilities of a black & white photo are increased almost tenfold!
Below are some examples we think show off the brilliant nostalgic feeling that a desaturated image can draw from your thoughts!
Even though photosurrealism isn’t in the dictionary, we think it is more than suited to this type of digital art.
All of the following images featured in this post are from an amazing digital artist we stumbled over on deviantArt known as AdonisWerther. His work is a mad mash-up of digital photography and surrealism, presented in a fantastic way! To truly appreciate these works, visit his deviantArt page and view the full resolution counterparts.
Prints of these are available on devaintArt, so if you are interested: remember that no picture is complete without a custom frame from Picture Frames Express!
To truly appreciate the time, effort and intricate detail in these images, check out the artists deviantArt page here – AdonisWerther for the full resolution pics and purchase prints.
Until next time, The Picture Frames Express Team.
Excellent Digital Art
Following with our last posts theme of digital illustration, we are going to introduce one of our new favourite artists of the digital age… Tiago Hoisel.
Hoisel is responsible for some of the greatest digital illustrations available on the web, his fantastic caricature style combined with the photo-realistic shading and lighting effects creates an almost true to life image that would dazzle the likes of Da Vinci and Donatello.
Below are a few of our choice favourites, hopefully they impress you as much as they did us!

A dogs life in Picture Frames

After our last post about life in spring we thought we’d take a closer look at one of mans best friend, Dogs!
You’d be forgive for thinking dogs and digital photography isn’t exactly going to be ground breaking. You would of course be wrong, barking possibly (sorry)
The following video from pedigree chum is a collection of hounds filmed at 1000 frames per second and some of the expressions they manage to capture are surprisingly human. Read the rest of this entry »
So! Spring is finally here, plenty more sheep and rabbits pottering around, flowers blooming again, leaves on the trees. The world is crawling back to life! With temperatures practically soaring over here in the UK, it’s getting easier by the day for us to forget such a cold and depressing winter. In light of this, we are going to post a few pictures of some of the best spring photography we could find across the web!

Alice in Wonderland is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll . It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures. Read the rest of this entry »
Painting, Radiohead & Nico Di Mattia
Anyone who reads this blog regularly will know we often post work by the speed painter Nico Di Mattia. His work is amazing and show what can be achieved with photoshop and a LOT of Skill.
Nico has done another piece as a tribute to Radiohead and it does not dissapoint!
Radiohead is one of my favorite bands in all the world. After enjoying their amazing live concert in Buenos Aires, I had to do a special tribute to them. So, I made this particular time lapse speed painting video.
High speed photography is the science of taking pictures of very fast phenomena.
In 1948, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) defined high-speed photography as any set of photographs captured by a camera capable of 128 frames per second or greater, and of at least three consecutive frames.
High speed photography can be considered to be the opposite of time-lapse photography.
In common usage, high speed photography may refer to either or both of the following meanings. The first is that the photograph itself may be taken in a way as to appear to freeze the motion, especially to reduce motion blur.
The second is that a series of photographs may be taken at a high sampling frequency or frame rate. The first requires a sensor with good sensitivity and either a very good shuttering system or a very fast strobe light. The second requires some means of capturing successive frames, either with a mechanical device or by moving data off electronic sensors very quickly.
Other considerations for high-speed photographers are record length, reciprocity breakdown, and spatial resolution.
Following the recent series of speed-paintings here on the Picture Frames Express blog, I would like to bring you forth. . . Into another dimension. . . The third one!
A place where Speed-painting has transformed and evolved into . . . . . Speed-sculpting!
The video below is one by Mike Poretti, a canadian student.
I found it amazing how such a beautiful sculpture can be created all from the comfort of a computer desk! And in 45 minutes!?
Brilliant!
Check further into the video to see just how much detail this guy puts into his amazing 3D sculpture!
Without further a-do. . . . .
