Advice For Taking Good Photographs – Part Two

As the photo competition continues to grow from strength to strength entrants will have noticed the competition has been split into themes. In honour of this month’s ‘The Great Outdoors’ theme we have focused this blog post towards taking a great shot outdoors that will be worthy of framing in one of our picture frames.

Landscapes can be tricky to get right, so the key is to practice and experiment to see what works for you.

Keep any horizon shots level within the photograph. It can be tempting to make the shot look ‘edgy ’ but the shot might also look crooked.

If there is a focal point for the viewer to look at, experiment with moving this point to the edge of the frame, rather than making it a centre point.

Look for different angles in which to take your photo. Standing is a common angle, so why not try changing the camera position to lying on the ground for an eye level view, or shooting a scene looking up from the ground. There are lots of different ideas to work with depending on the landscape you are photographing. You could get a bird’s eye view shot if you have a head for heights. Seeing a scene from another perspective often captures interest.

Avoid leaving empty space in a landscape photograph. If there is no point to focus on, make sure the image still have different and contrasting lines to look at. For example, if you want to capture a skyline and there is a point of interest, like a building or tree, this will stand out and look pleasing.  If the shot is simply too sparse and has no lines or focal point the photograph will end up with too much empty space and nothing else.

Use both portrait and landscape angles, with the camera on its side. A landscape shot can take on a different angle and perspective using a portrait shot.

Hopefully, the above tips have provided inspiration to get you out there into the great outdoors and begin taking some great photos that you can enter into our April photograph competition.

Creating Multi-Image Picture

If you want to display something a little different in a picture frame then why not try creating your own panoramic-like image which can be displayed in a frame with three or more images going either across or down. Next time you go somewhere and see a beautiful view, such as the setting sun on the horizon or if you have a big group of friends but don’t want to squeeze everyone into a small space you could try splitting it up into multiple photos.

When taking a photo of the setting sun on your holiday, take one photo and then move your camera across the horizon and take another, repeating for as many photos as you want. This can also work with large groups of people; get everyone into a line and move along taking photos.

Be careful to make sure that your photos don’t overlap and that you don’t leave too big a gap in between them either. You can then display these multi photos in a frame to create a larger image, as you can see below.

You could have one image of a horizon...

...or split it into three!

If you want to give it a go then you can get a custom picture frame from Picture Frames Express and use the frame designer to order whatever size frame you want. You could even be really adventurous and try and create an image split over two rows and two columns!

Frame the easter weather!

As you’ve probably noticed, the UK has got it’s groove back! In terms of weather anyway!

Say goodbye to those wooly gloves, hats and winter jackets because spring is officialy here!

All over Britain we’ve been bathing in a lovely warmth for the past week or two and the effects are really starting to show. People are scrambling to their sheds and brushing the cobwebs off the deck-chairs and there are smiles where-ever you go! Though we may be known as a nation to over-react with any weather, it hasn’t stopped anyone from lashing on the suncreams!

We have a wonderful series of bank holidays coming up, giving us all a little time to relax and lounge about in the garden, basking in the beautiful weather. Don’t forget though, easter is only a few days away too! We’ll all be having to cram our fridges with choccy so it doesn’t melt!

This fantastic weather has arrived just in time to make our May!

It’s a great time to dig those picnic baskets and coolers out of the loft and start packing some sarnies! A perfect reason to dig out those dusty digital cameras and snap a few photos to frame! Summer and spring can bring us some of the best times of our lives, so why not give yourself something to remember those good times by?

What better way to preserve a memory than framing it and hanging it on your wall!

Here at picture frames express, we offer a great range of fully customisable and made-to-measure framing options to suit any photo, any wall and any customer!

Take a look around our site and see if you can find the perfect from for those sunny photos! We’re sure you’ll find something to suit your taste!

We need a bigger picture frame

We’ve covered a number of digitally concieved images and styles here on the Picture Frames Express blog, even several ways to digitally enhance an average photo.

We’ve seen how combining several elements for different photographs can create surreal landscapes or even realistic caricatures.

But what if we were to take several photos of our subject from different angles and digitally stitch them all together?

We end up with a…

P A N O R A M A

Just incase you didn’t notice, this image scrolls left to right.

Feel free to click the image itself to open it in a new window and experience it in full resolution.

This wonderful effect is achieved by carefully aligning several photos either horizontally, verically or even both; to create the illusion of one great seamless image!

One that is way too big to frame!

Below is a useful tutorial from YouTube, incase you are interested in how exactly these awe-inspiring photos are pieced together.

Or maybe even make your own!

Happy Panoramas!

How to frame a landscape.

Landscape photography is arguably the most common form of photography, showing wide open spaces, most often devoid of life to express the vastness of area pictured. The only time people are involved in landscape photography is normally for scaling purposes, to convey the size of an object, or to add depth to the photo by giving an idea of distance.

Prior to the California Gold Rush, which gained momentum around 1848, explorers headed west. They brought cameras with them. Beginning around 1860, photographic prints were developed and became widespread. – Source: www.ehow.com

Areas like ‘Monument Valley – Utah’ in the American mid-west are hailed as being the beginning of landscape photography and who could blame them for taking cameras, with immense shots like this just asking to be captured. An endless sprawling desert broken only by huge sand mesa’s. Natural skyscrapers jutting out of the ground in such an unbelievably sparse environment… Beautiful!

Fantastic frames!

They encase our photos and keep them safe from dust, scratches and other potential mishaps. Picture frames are available in all shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common. They are designed to keep our printed memories alive and well.

One of the most popular gifts to give is a photo and picture frame combination. A couple celebrating a milestone anniversary may enjoy receiving a retouched image of their wedding photo or a special moment captured on film from their earliest days together. Today’s technology allows old photos to be restored with the touch of a button, but that’s not the only way to restore an old image. Many gift givers present an artist’s rendition of a photograph, which may be either oil or acrylic. And, what is the best way to present this beautiful memento? In picture frames, of course.

If you are giving the gift of a photo, select the perfect picture frame to go with it. If you envision the picture being hung above the fireplace, purchase a large photo and picture frame. The border should be bold and would preferably match something in the home’s decor. If the photo is small and better suited as a tabletop gift, a regular picture frame will suffice. No matter the size, a picture frame is often too awkward to use with gift wrap. Most opt for a large decorative bow in the top corner, which is simple but outstanding.

There are a number of other ways to use picture frames in gift presentations, including baby photos or a collage of special memories, graduation photos, wedding memories or even a special pet memoir. Many have heard of novelty companies who offer a star-naming service. In exchange for a fee, individuals can name a star after a friend, relative or other acquaintance. These are popular gifts because not many people can say they have a star named after them. Upon receipt of the star kit, a large certificate is included. Even though the service usually offers a choice of picture frames to go with the star kit, any individual can do the work themselves for a lot less money.

If it weren’t for picture frames, our photos would certainly age much faster than we would like. Discoloration, scratching and unwanted bending would most likely be a problem. Thanks to the sturdy help of picture frames, however, our memories no longer have to remain in our minds because they can forever live on in our photos. And best of all, we get to enjoy them every day.
