June's Photographer of the Month - Tim Edgeler

Why Tim Got Into Photography

Tim got his first SLR around 10 years ago when he started regularly taking photos at the Scottish mountain bike races. He really enjoyed being able to capture riders at high speed and this gave him a taste for exploring other aspects of photography. Tim quickly realised that the aspect of photography he enjoyed the most is being able to capture subjects or scenes in a way that you would not normally see them. Edinburgh is a very photogenic place and he spent many nights out and about capturing the city by night. He also enjoys playing about with long exposure and has started to look to the skies to try his hand at astro-photography. Through Tim’s job he also captures some of the biggest and best corporate events in the UK and Europe which come with their own set of challenges.

Inspiration Behind Tim’s Winning Photo

Last summer Tim and a friend went on a 3000 km road trip around British Columbia. One of their stops was at an amazing lake near the US border where they were relaxing with another friend. One afternoon they were invited out by a local onto his new wake-surfing boat and just before Tim got onto the boat he luckily ran back and grabbed his camera! Tim started shooting when he saw how good the surfer was and managed to get the winning shot as she jumped off the wave being created by the boat. Tim knew it was a good shot as soon as he had captured it. Tim and his friend were then given a shot at wake surfing which they found to be an absolute blast. Being a keen surfer on the East coast of Scotland (not a reliable wave in very cold water), the opportunity to ride an endless smooth wave in water over 20 degrees was not one he was going to pass up!

Plans for the Future

Tim has just left his full time job at an event production company to start up his own creative digital design and photography agency, Digital Triangle. Tim will be doing motion graphics and design work but also photography at live sporting and corporate events and is working towards shooting weddings. Tim wants to do a week long photography trip into the Highlands and Islands of Scotland later this year to do some astro-photography. The minimal light pollution and amazing scenery will create a beautiful setting for Tim to capture.

Tim’s Favourite Camera and Why

Tim bought a Canon 5D Mark III last year and has found it to be a fantastic camera. Tim has found that his camera has allowed him to capture images that he wouldn’t have been able to on his old 40D. The cameras full frame sensor twinned with a wide f/2.8 16-35mm can create some amazing perspective shots and the much expanded ISO lets Tim shoot in low light without external lighting.
