Ross Folk - Photographer of the Month - February '19

Introduce yourself

My name is Ross, from Ipswich, Suffolk. I’m Head Chef in a care home and I do photography on the side. With being a chef sometimes it’s hard to get out and shoot because of the hours. Although I love it when I do. I also do weddings and street
photography.

How did you get into photography?

A few years back I decided I wanted to give photography a go, so I got an entry-level Canon. Although now I shoot with Sony. I started going out shooting in local parks, not really knowing what I was doing. A few hundred YouTube videos later and I learnt a lot.

Do you have any particular style of photography you specialise in?

I love street photography but I have now started to get into black and white landscape fine art photos. I also shoot a few weddings every year but I find that’s a hard market to break into.

What can you tell us about your entry, ”Edinburgh Castle”, in January’s Architecture photo competition?

I was in Edinburgh for a week away for the Christmas market. Walked to the castle and it’s a stunning view from there. It was taken on a Sony Rx100 mk 3 edited in Lightroom and Photoshop.

What do you enjoy about photography?

I like spending time outside in a new town or city, and seeing what is around. Looking at the little details that people miss.

Tell us about one of your projects/your work…

I have a solo exhibition in September 2020, it’s going to be of Suffolk seaside towns, so I’m looking to do more travelling this year.

If you could offer one piece of advice to aspiring photographers what would it be?

Don’t worry about gear, just get out there and shoot and develop your skills.

Where can we see your work?

Do you have any plans for the rest of the year?

Just try to get out there and shoot a lot more.
